Fort Severn, ON (Washao)
Community Information
•The most northern community in Northern Ontario. •It has a population of about 364 (2021 census). •Almost all of the people are Indigenous (majority Cree, some Ojibway). •Industry includes (in order of people working in those fields) health care/social assistance, education, public administration, construction, retail, public services. •It was one of the earliest fur trading posts in the New World, located near the outlet of the Severn River into Hudson Bay. •Fly-in community. Winter road from Thompson, Manitoba. A barge brings supplies from Moosenee, On. •I was talking to a retired Anglican priest, who served in Moosonee, ON, and he mentioned that the Hudson Bay Company predominately Scottish. It's interesting to note that there are 10 people of Scottish heritage listed in their population.* Christian presence •There was a Catholic Church, but it is now closed. However, more than half the population (185) identify themselves as Catholic. •There is an Anglican Church (pictured below). •There is a Pentecostal Church (PAOC). The Pentecostal Church has a relationship with Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church in Sudbury, ON. •Existing connections to Sudbury and Tyendinaga (near Deseronto) would increase.
